Clothing Swap: Children, Men, and Women’s Clothing Swap

As a way to be good stewards, question our consumption, get rid of stuff, recycle and renew wardrobes of the Calvary community, ThirdPlace is hosting a clothing swap on Saturday, January 24 from 12-3pm at Calvary Baptist Church. Acceptable items to swap/donate are children’s clothing & shoes and/or men and women’s clothing, shoes, and accessories of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Contributions may be made to drop box locations in the Calvary Church fellowship hall or Calvary Midtown high school lobby before/after services January 17-18. All contributions will then be presorted and categorically arranged at Calvary Baptist Church. On January 24 from 12-3pm, swap participants are welcome to browse the contributions and are asked to take home no more than 6 items per woman/child/man. Excess items will then be donated to a non-profit organization (such as Goodwill) and/or used in Calvary missions.

Umuryango Children’s Network: An organization that seeks to see the Rwandan Street Children permanently transformed from isolated outcasts to productive, fully integrated members of the community who are physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually whole. Umuryango takes care of street children in Rwanda by placing them in homes and meet their needs in practical ways. * 9:30am-11:00am: Personal connection time with God. Solitude and Reflection.

Then we will break off for a time of reflection and solitude and you can go wherever you want (indoors or outdoors) and find some time to pray, journal, paint, sing...whatever you prefer! (9:30am-11:00am). We will come together then at 11:00am in the Log Room for a time of sharing, corporate worship and prayer. There will be some prayer guides made available to help better guide your time alone; feel free to use them or do your own thing. Bring whatever supplies you’ll need (journal, paints, music, etc) and join us for an exciting time to “unite in prayer” for the World, our community, and each other!

Faith For Thought, Saturday, November 8th: is a one-day conference for any college student, grad student, 20-something or individual who wants to connect real faith with real life. Our theme this year is “Everything Under the Sun.” If all things belong to God, what does this mean for our everyday lives and the issues we face as Christians? Faith for Thought is space to come to together with others who want to critically engage questions like this and be inspired into action. Keynote speakers include Crystal Downing, an English professor from Messiah College with her talk "Seeing with the Sun: Postmodern Reflections".  

Breakout sessions will be led by many very interesting people including our own Tracy Conklin and Suresh Canagarajah. The cost is $20, which includes lunch. Scholarships are available. Friday Forum: Friday, Oct. 31 at 4pm:  Brendaly Drayton of the Adult Education program will wrap up Friday Forum's six-part series on Faith and Pedagogy by focusing our attention on "Jesus as an Adult Educator."

This Friday Forum is the sixth installment of a six-part series on "Faith and Pedagogy."  Most of you will lead a classroom at some point in your graduate school careers.  Many of you will have had very little teacher's training or experience, and the classroom may look big, intimidating, unfriendly.  And that's before the students come in!  This series attempts to provide practical ways to be a good teacher but also Christian ways of thinking about the educational process--from the simplest classroom habits to the role of leader and facilitator, and/or to the latest and loftiest models of education and cognition.  In fact, the series is based on the assumption that thinking in Christian ways will help us think in practical ways as well--that being a Christian teacher really works.

World Missions Training and Opportunities: Interested in missions opportunities abroad?  Want more training?  Perspectives is not so much a course, as it is a "movement" involving tens of thousands of God's people throughout the world finding their niche in God's overall purpose to bless the nations. Employment Opportunities:

PAID SITTERS NEEDED: Calvary is in need of two paid child care providers for a parenting class being run Wednesdays, 9/10/08-12/10/08.  The class is from 7-8:30, the child care providers are needed from 6:45-8:45 at the church.  $16 per night or $272 for the semester.  If you are interested and can begin this Wed, 9/10, that would be great, otherwise you are welcome to begin 9/17.  We have two rooms, one with 12 elementary aged children and one with (7) two to four year olds.  Choice of room would be available on a first-come basis.  Ideally we would love for the providers to be able to work the entire semester, but appreciate any help you can offer so if you are interested in partial dates (every other week, or particular months) please let me know!  We are also accepting paid child care provider applications, let me know if you are interested.  I send out dates and you simply sign-up if you can help cover an event.  You can call (867-5827) or email, killerbl@comcast.net if you are able to help with the class or are interested in joining the pool of providers.  Thank you!  Laura Kilareski

From Calvary– 1250 University Drive: From parking lot, turn Right (southeast) onto University Drive. Turn left onto Atherton Street at the first red-light (KFC on right). Go straight for 2-3miles (south) on South Atherton Street/US-322 BR. Continue for 3.4miles on US-322 BR East (thru State College & Boalsburg). US-322 BR East becomes US-322/Boal Avenue. At this point (Business & Bypass 322 merge) with Boalsburg Technology Park on your right.**

**Just after this slow down & move to the right shoulder. The gravel entrance is marked by a small white sign 'Harvest Fields Ministry Center & Calvary Offices' (1100 E. Boal Ave). Turn right into the driveway, located in a row of tall pine trees, just opposite a white brick wall. If you pass Jack's Mill Drive, Elk's Club Golf Course or Tussey Mountain Ski Area sign, you have gone too far. Men's Fraternity: Men's Fraternity is back! A great way to grow with other guys as well as meet older, wiser men in our midst.

This year we will return to Session 1: The Quest for Authentic Manhood -- the foundational level or ground floor of manhood. This 24-session study focuses on a man's core identity and gives an overview of basic manhood issues. It will help men deal with various identity issues by looking back at past wounds and other things that may have distorted their idea of biblical masculinity. Throughout the course of the study, men will learn how to clearly define manhood and will finally be able to give a succinct and passionate answer to the questions, "What is a man?" and "What am I living to be?" The class is from 7-8:30, the child care providers are needed from 6:45-8:45 at the church. $16 per night or $272 for the semester. If you are interested and can begin this Wed, 9/10, that would be great, otherwise you are welcome to begin 9/17. We have two rooms, one with 12 elementary aged children and one with (7) two to four year olds. Choice of room would be available on a first-come basis. Ideally we would love for the providers to be able to work the entire semester, but appreciate any help you can offer so if you are interested in partial dates (every other week, or particular months) please let me know! Encore Service Worship Team Gathering

Hey friends, you (and anyone else interested in serving with the worship team at Calvary's Encore Service) is invited to join us for a worship team shindig.

When: Friday, Sept. 19th at 7:30 PM
Where: Ellen Taricani's house (1511 Ash Avenue)

Please strongly consider coming if your heart is to worship with the team up front. While attendance is totally not mandatory, here's some of the things we'd like to discuss:

• Logistics
• Scheduling
• Set-up/tear-down
• Serving in other ways

Above all, however, we'd like to spend time praying with one another, listening to each other, listening to God, and actually practicing (aka WORSHIPPING) together. As such, we'll probably put a time limit on our "agenda," and instead dedicate the majority of the time to simply spending time together in prayer and worship (perhaps breaking up into small groups?). It will be fun! If there is anything detail (or philosophically) -oriented that you would particularly like to be addressed, please just shoot me an email beforehand. If you have anything else you want to talk about (such as the wisdom of McCain's recent VP pick, Edward Scissorhands, or Kangaroo maternity habits), I would love to hear from you.

Helpsline ministry at Calvary: we get requests to help people in the area with moving needs. A few requests have been people from Calvary, but in general they are people in the community who are not physically able to move themselves and do not have family/friends in the area that can help them out. The majority of the moves are usually done on Saturdays (whenever possible) since it makes it easier to find volunteers who work during the week. This is an opportunity to help out when you have time available and does not commit anyone to any specific opportunity or weekend. I send out an email or call to see who might be able to help once there is a move request in with a specific date/time established. I am looking for someone to babysit for an awesome family that I typically sit for on football weekends. I will be out of town on Labor Day weekend, which is the first home game of the season. The family would need a sitter for Friday night (August 29th) from about 6pm to 11pm and Saturday (August 30th) from about 10am to 4pm (or until the end of the football game, whenever that is). They are three kids-- all girls; the twins are about 2.5 years old now and the baby is about 5 or so months old. The family is from the Philly area, but they visit their in-laws in State College during Penn State football weekends. The sitter would babysit from the in-laws home, which is on Nimitz Ave, very close to Calvary, right off University Drive. Ideally, the sitter would have experience babysitting multiple children (including infants and toddlers). We are currently looking for four more sponsors for the Adopt-A-Child program at the Umuryango Boys' Home in Bukomero, Rwanda (www.umuryango.org ). There are four spots open in the home because four of the boys are now in secondary school and do not live at the home anymore.

This is the program that was started after the team that went to Rwanda returned from the trip last year. This is a commitment of one-year and a monthly donation of $50. The monthly donation covers the boy's food, medical costs, school supplies, and clothing. We also prefer the sponsor maintains a personal relationship with the boy. You can do this through writing emails and/or sending cards or care packages. The correspondence is translated into the native language, Kinyarwanda, and then given to the boy. If you would like to be a sponsor, you would receive a monthly email reminder about it.

You can send a check to the US bank account, make an electronic transfer from your bank, or pay online. You can do it on your own, or if you can't do it alone, feel free to pull in a group of your friends or Life Group and do it together...a great way to build community and serve together! We've seen this program bless the street children in the home in countless ways, and relationships established between the sponsors and the boys is remarkable.
