Elijah Performances, Saturday, Sept.13 and Sunday, Sept.14th: Penn State Christian Grads and State College Evangelical Free Church are thrilled to be co-hosting two performances of Elijah here in State College! Arts/Music/Justice Tour: Saturday, October 4, 2008, 4:00pm - 11:00pm at Messiah College, Grantham, PA: Critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter Sara Groves has gathered a group of fellow-acclaimed artists and friends Brandon Heath, Derek Webb, Sandra McCracken and author/artist Charlie Peacock, for her ART*MUSIC*JUSTICE tour this fall, which will benefit both the International Justice Mission and Food For the Hungry. The International Justice Mission (www.IJM.org) is a human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. Food for the Hungry (www.FH.org) works in more than 26 developing countries providing disaster and emergency relief, and implementing sustainable development programs to transform communities physically and spiritually. With dates running from Sept 19th through October 26th, the tour is a unique concert opportunity to add to the beauty, seek justice and give God praise. Desiring to further educate the church on God's heart for justice, gain advocates for the oppressed, and show evidence of a God at work in this world. A few requests have been people from Calvary, but in general they are people in the community who are not physically able to move themselves and do not have family/friends in the area that can help them out. The majority of the moves are usually done on Saturdays (whenever possible) since it makes it easier to find volunteers who work during the week. This is an opportunity to help out when you have time available and does not commit anyone to any specific opportunity or weekend. I am looking for someone to babysit for an awesome family that I typically sit for on football weekends. I will be out of town on Labor Day weekend, which is the first home game of the season. The family would need a sitter for Friday night (August 29th) from about 6pm to 11pm and Saturday (August 30th) from about 10am to 4pm (or until the end of the football game, whenever that is). They are three kids-- all girls; the twins are about 2.5 years old now and the baby is about 5 or so months old. The family is from the Philly area, but they visit their in-laws in State College during Penn State football weekends. We are currently looking for four more sponsors for the Adopt-A-Child program at the Umuryango Boys' Home in Bukomero, Rwanda (www.umuryango.org ). There are four spots open in the home because four of the boys are now in secondary school and do not live at the home anymore.
This is the program that was started after the team that went to Rwanda returned from the trip last year. This is a commitment of one-year and a monthly donation of $50. The monthly donation covers the boy's food, medical costs, school supplies, and clothing. We also prefer the sponsor maintains a personal relationship with the boy. You can do this through writing emails and/or sending cards or care packages. The correspondence is translated into the native language, Kinyarwanda, and then given to the boy. If you would like to be a sponsor, you would receive a monthly email reminder about it.
You can send a check to the US bank account, make an electronic transfer from your bank, or pay online. You can do it on your own, or if you can't do it alone, feel free to pull in a group of your friends or Life Group and do it together...a great way to build community and serve together! We've seen this program bless the street children in the home in countless ways, and relationships established between the sponsors and the boys is remarkable. Service Opportunity
People's Choice festival in Boalsburg on Thursday, July 10th - Saturday, July 12th. It will mainly consist of wiping down and cleaning tables at the dining tents, as well as driving golf carts around to help the elderly people to their cars and transporting their packages. It is organized through Centre Vision and the United Methodist Church. Please contact Sharon Taverno set140@psu.edu for more info.
